Thiran Knowledge Series – Edition 01: A Practical Knowledge Session for Architects and Designers in Chennai
What is The Thiran Knowledge Series?
In architecture and interior design, materials are rarely just components. They quietly influence durability, usability, and the long-term experience of a space.
Yet if you speak to many professionals privately, they often admit something interesting. Much of the practical knowledge about materials still comes from scattered sources — a bit from site experience, a bit from vendor conversations, and occasionally from independent research.
Structured discussions about materials do not happen very often. That gap is exactly where the Thiran Knowledge Series begins.
Edition 01 of the Thiran Knowledge Series has been planned as a focused knowledge session for architects, interior designers, and architecture students who want to understand materials and interior systems in a more practical way.
Not through presentations alone, but through discussion, examples, and real-world insights.
The session will take place at Senbaga Life Spaces in Chromepet, Chennai, bringing together professionals and learners interested in exploring how material decisions influence interior outcomes.
What the Thiran Knowledge Series Is About
The idea behind the Thiran Knowledge Series is fairly simple.
Create a space where people working in architecture and interiors can pause for a few hours and revisit the fundamentals — materials, systems, and the practical decisions that shape real projects.
In reality, much of this understanding develops gradually on sites and through completed projects. But stepping away from active work for a short while often helps professionals see familiar materials from a slightly different perspective.
Instead of theoretical lectures, the sessions focus on:
- practical material knowledge
- real-world applications
- product ecosystems used in modern interiors
Over time, the intention is to build Thiran into a platform where architects, designers, and students can exchange knowledge about materials and interior systems used in contemporary projects.
Edition 01 begins with two focused sessions that explore both materials and interior systems.

Session 1: Understanding Wood and Engineered Panels
Wood and engineered boards quietly form the backbone of most interior work.
From wardrobes to modular kitchens, from partitions to furniture systems — a surprising portion of interior design relies on how these materials perform over time.
Interestingly, the impact of a material decision is rarely visible on the first day.
More often than not, the real consequences appear months later — swelling boards, weakened joints, or surfaces that begin to deteriorate earlier than expected.
The first session of the Thiran Knowledge Series – Edition 01 will explore practical aspects such as:
- borer prevention in wood
- different wood varieties used in interiors
- fibreboard composition and structure
- applications of wood and engineered panels
Rather than simply listing material categories, the conversation will focus on where each material performs best and where it may not.
Because in interior work, the wrong material decision rarely fails immediately — it quietly reveals itself over time.

Session 2: Indian Manufactured Interior Solutions
Modern interiors today rely heavily on integrated systems.
The furniture hardware, the bathroom fittings, and the electrical systems are no longer isolated products. Increasingly, they operate as connected parts of a larger interior ecosystem.
The second session in the Thiran Knowledge Series introduces participants to Indian manufactured interior solutions, covering areas such as:
- furniture hardware
- bathroom fittings
- electrical fittings
- product ecosystem integration
These topics will be illustrated through examples from the EBCO, Jaquar, and Havells ecosystem — brands widely used in residential and commercial interior projects across India.
In practice, these systems influence far more than installation.
They shape how smoothly furniture operates, how fittings perform after years of use, and how comfortably people interact with a space in everyday life.
Often, the smallest hardware decision ends up affecting usability for years.
A Learning Space for the Design Community
The Thiran Knowledge Series is intentionally not structured as a large conference.
Instead, the session will be kept relatively small to allow meaningful interaction among participants.
Architects, designers, and architecture students will have the opportunity to ask questions, exchange ideas, and discuss practical observations that rarely appear in brochures or specification sheets.
Sometimes the most valuable learning comes from simple conversations around materials themselves — examining them closely, touching them, and discussing how they behave in real environments.
Those conversations often stay with professionals long after the session ends.

The Thiran Knowledge Series – Edition 01 marks the beginning of what is intended to become a continuing platform for material awareness and knowledge exchange within the architecture and design community. Sometimes stepping away from project deadlines for a few hours and returning to the fundamentals can be surprisingly valuable.
And that, in many ways, is the intention behind Thiran.
